Werewolves of Miller's Hollow

Description

Werewolves of Miller's Hollow is a game that takes place in a small village which is haunted by werewolves. Each player is secretly assigned a role - Werewolf, Ordinary Townsfolk, or a special character. There is also a Moderator player who controls the flow of the game. The game alternates between night and day phases. At night, the Werewolves secretly choose a Villager to kill. During the day, the Villager who was killed is revealed and is out of the game. The remaining Villagers (and special villagers alike) then deliberate and vote on a player they suspect is a Werewolf. The chosen player is "lynched", reveals his/her role and is out of the game. Werewolf is a social game that requires no equipment to play, and can accommodate almost any large group of players.

Review

Werewolf (as we colloquially call it), is the perfect game when you have a lot of guests, and one particular person who is great at setting a scene. It’s the kind of game that will induce anxiety if you’re a werewolf; having to lie, cast doubts and redirect suspicions to other innocent players to protect yourself and your wolf pack. And conversely, as a villager, Werewolf will have you questioning your friends and family for life as they lie and bluff their way each round.

Werewolves is enjoyable on its own, with just the werewolves and villagers characters, but when you add the special characters, this game goes from fun to intriguing as each brings about a twist. For example, the Cupid character forces two players (whether they be werewolf or villager) to fall in love and if one dies, the other dies immediately of a heart break. The Witch has the ability to save, and poison, someone. While the Sheriff, who is always a target of the werewolves, if they aren’t already a secret werewolf, gets two votes and so on… And getting killed off doesn’t diminish your fun as it’s highly entertaining to watch the scene play out and get your suspicions confirmed as to who the werewolves were, though as a ghost you are forced to keep your silence and can’t warn your fellow villagers.

Integral to the fun of the game is the moderator. Anyone can be a moderator as the game comes with a helpful little book to guide the narrator along, but if you have a person that can add a little theatrics then Werewolf will be all the more enjoyable.

We would highly recommend using a timer for debates because those can go on for quite some time, though seeing your friends defend and argue can be amusing to a point. This game is also really easy to pick up which is ideal for large groups.
